This Friday morning, January 16, 2009, at 10 am the Celebration of Seagrove Potters under the auspices of SAPA will present checks to Westmoore Elementary School and later to Seagrove Elementary School Art Departments from funds raised at their inaugural event this past November 21-23. Each school will be given ½ of the proceeds generated by the Children's Booth, a special kids only buying area that raised $1250 during the event. The pottery for sale at the Children's booth was donated by the participating potters and sold for $1 - $5 dollars a piece. Pots from the Children's booththat did not sell during the Celebration are being donated to the two schools to sell at their discretion.
"We feel so blessed to have had such extraordinary success at our inaugural event," said Ben Owen III, chairman of the Celebration Committee, "We are extremely pleased that we are able to give back to our local community. The desire to benefit our community was an integral part of our mission from the beginning. Economic times are tough for State and Federal Government and we are aware that funding for art in the schools is frequently cut or severely limited during these periods. We want to ensure that our community, with such a rich craft heritage can provide their students with the necessary materials to bring that creativity to life through hands-on exposure. We plan to continue this endeavor in future events."
The Celebration of Seagrove Potters merged with SAPA, (Seagrove Area Potters
Association) a local non-profit marketing entity that promotes, publicizes and markets the Seagrove community of potters, in August of 2008. According to Sally Larson, president of SAPA, "This donation to the art departments of our local schools helps to fulfill our mission to develop partnerships within our community with civic, cultural and governmental organizations. We are also finalizing a purchase list of pottery books and DVD's to augment the Seagrove Library collection, with funds generated at the Celebration. That donation will be made in February."
The Celebration of Seagrove Potters is already hard at work planning for an even more successful show this coming November 20 - 22.
